Lesson 4 of 5

Getting your driving licence

The steps from learner's licence to a permanent licence.

3 min +10 points

Step 1: Learner's licence

Apply on the government's Parivahan Sarathi website (sarathi.parivahan.gov.in) or at your RTO. You need age and address proof. You take a short test on road rules and signs. In many states you can take it online.

Step 2: Practise

Practise with a licensed driver beside you, with an "L" sign on the vehicle. A good driving school helps you learn safely and prepare for the test.

Step 3: Driving test

After the waiting period, book a driving test at the RTO. Pass it, and you get your permanent driving licence.

For driving jobs

  • Commercial vehicles need a transport licence. Some cities also ask for a badge or extra permit.
  • Keep a clean record: no fines or accidents makes you a strong candidate.
