Lesson 3 of 3

Measuring and simple calculations

Reading a tape, checking level and working out quantities.

4 min +10 points

Reading a measuring tape

Most tapes show feet and inches on one side and centimetres and millimetres on the other. 1 foot = 12 inches. 1 metre = 100 centimetres. Hook the tape end firmly and keep it straight.

Level and square

  • A spirit level shows if a surface is flat: the bubble should be in the middle.
  • For a square corner, use the 3-4-5 rule: mark 3 on one side, 4 on the other; the line between them should be 5.

Simple area

Area of a floor = length × width. A room 12 feet long and 10 feet wide is 120 square feet. Add a little extra for cutting and waste when you order tiles.
