Lesson 1 of 5

Choosing the right work for you

Match your strengths, health and life to a trade you can grow in.

3 min +10 points

Start with what you like and do well

Think about what you enjoy and what people praise you for. Do you like cooking for many people? Fixing things? Driving? Talking to customers? You will work harder and longer at something you like.

Think about your life

  • Hours: night shifts, early mornings or long days?
  • Travel: can you work far from home, or must you stay close?
  • Health: some work is heavy or on your feet all day.
  • Family: do you need food and stay, or weekly offs on certain days?

Look at growth

Choose work where you can grow: a kitchen helper can become a cook, then a chef. A driver can move to heavy vehicles, or start a taxi. Ask people in the trade how they grew.
